The Integrated Self

Fully functioning persons are characterised by a unity in thought, emotion, and action that amounts to "being someone" or having an "integrated self".

There are seven functions of an integrated self

Emotional Connectedness
- Extensive connections with implicit emotions and body perception

Broad Vigilance 
- The scope of information processing 

Utilisation of Felt Feedback
- Enabling a broad array of consequences of one's actions 

Unconscious Processing 
- Making wise decisions from numerous inputs such as needs, values, goals, action possibilities as well as others needs and intentions

Integration of Negative Experiences  
- Merging contradictory needs and emotions of oneself and others including both positive and negative sides of en experience

Extended Resilience 
- A capacity to turn emotional vulnerability into emotional strength

Extended Trust
- A deeply rooted tendency towards positive feelings about one's existence
